Homemade Citrus Cranberry Sauce

Instructions

1
Finely grate 1 teaspoon orange zest and 1 teaspoon lemon zest and combine in a small bowl. Save remaining lemon for other uses.
2
Cut the rind and outer white membrane from the oranges, following the curve of the fruit. Cut between the inner membranes to remove orange segments. Cut each segment into thirds and transfer to the bowl with the citrus zest.
3
Combine the cranberries, sugar, and water in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Cook until all cranberries have popped and mixture thickens slightly, 8-10 minutes.
4
Stir in the orange segments and citrus zest. Remove from heat and cool cranberry sauce to room temperature.
5
Chill sauce at least 3 hours before serving to thicken.

Tips & Tricks (5)

  • Zest Before Juicing 🍊
Always zest your citrus fruits before cutting or juicing them—once halved, the fruit becomes difficult to zest properly. Microplane both the lemon and orange zest for the finest, most flavorful result.
  • Macerate the Cranberries 🫐
Let the fresh cranberries sit in the sugar and citrus juice for 10-15 minutes before cooking to break down their skins slightly and allow better flavor absorption throughout the sauce.
  • Control the Cooking Time ⏱️
Simmer on medium heat for just 12-15 minutes until the berries pop—overcooking breaks them down into mush and loses the fresh texture and bright citrus notes that make this sauce special.
  • Orange Segment Technique 🔪
Supreme your navel orange by cutting away the pith completely and carefully slicing between membranes to get clean, tender segments that add visual appeal and prevent bitter white pith from affecting the flavor.
  • Chill Before Serving 🧊
Make the sauce 1-2 days ahead and refrigerate—the flavors meld beautifully as it sits, and the sauce thickens to the perfect consistency as it cools, creating a more refined final texture.
